I wanna be an architect, but I loath school. I plan on working in a firm as an assistant for seven years while studying architecture on my own and working construction so I can then take the ARE and practice that way. School is the bane of my existence and I don't learn through rote memorization at all. Why would I spend thousands of dollars, and go into debt, just to be miserable for four years? I won't. I'm gonna get real work experience and credibility.

My cousin is an architect and while he had fun in architecture school, his work was so unbelievably hard that every single week I saw him going to buy more supplies or using his dining table to put all his stuff on to work on it. I had never seen him so thin and dead inside before. I do not envy architects.

WOW I SO DISAGREE! Design the inside first and then have fun with the outside. Not all spaces need to be seen, but can still be used. Are we talking retail store? home? museum? How the outside appears to the public is irrelevant, it’s art. Architecture has always been art, so yes it will be criticized no matter what. Make a sphere building (Amazon HQ Seattle) or a unicorn shaped high rise (in my dreams). Either the school you went to was very traditional or they were only focused on what would profit to the masses.

I go to a tech school and I had to use a form of CAD to build a house model with certain restrictions and I did not account for the thickness of the walls and it was a pain because my door could not be normal size because they intersecting with the other walls

Omg, did we go to the same architecture school? I also experienced the prof getting really heated about columns, which are DEFINITELY NOT CALLED PILLARS!!!! *rAGE* Also you may blame architecture school for your insomnia but I blame it for my ability to fall asleep anywhere, any time. I was so tired out from the whole course. One time I pulled a 84-hour with no sleep whatsoever just to get my final designs done in time for a crit. It was awful but literally every week my tutorials were like "meh change everything" so there was never any let-up. My coursemates dubbed the course "architorture"... ...Anyway, I transferred to a Math degree.

Why did I leave my art major and switch a happier English major? Because I was barely 18 and my art teacher yelled at me for 20 minutes for using the wrong shade of red on the first day.

As Graduate student getting my masters in Architecture I can tell you went to a more technical school of architecture. I’m sorry your experience wasn’t the best. I think you would’ve had a better experience in a program that was more art driven / abstract. I find that most of the people I meet who went to technical schools didn’t enjoy it as much. All that to say Architecture school can actually be enjoyable and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else ✨

I don't live in the west, there are more technical schools in asia than design degrees. I also hope there are more art-driven universities here, you're lucky you had a good experience.

TB to the time I took Architecture in grade 11 and flat out our teacher treated us like engineers and we had to do the most out of nothing :D and the way every sketch and design has to be perfect or it would look uneven made me cry.
